近日来深为多伦多华人社区的爱心及赈灾义举所感动。天津同乡会在短短的一天时间就筹集赈款数千元,感谢大家的共同努力.
救灾是不分国界与民族的,我想在充分调动华人社区的力量外,还应当动员自己周围的非华人朋友。今天上午我准备了一份英文短信发给我的学术圈同事,也许能供大家参考,并鼓励大家使用(全文,或修改,无版权问题)。 抢救生命期以后的工作很多,如恢复通讯及交通,安置无家可归人口,抚慰失去亲人的精神创伤,治疗伤残人员,提供纯净,预防及控制各种传染性疾病(如伤寒,霍乱,痢疾,钩端螺旋体病等),都需要大量的人力,物力,及时间。我们中大多数人都经历过唐山大地震,理解抗震救灾不是短期可以完成的。以各种方式与祖国及同胞共同抗灾是海外华人义不容辞的事。我下周回天津医科大学讲学,争取能去四川灾区参加疫情控制工作(我的本行)。

Dear
friends and colleagues:
The past
few days have been
inundated by massive
media coverage of the
catastrophic earthquake
that struck Sichuan,
China on May 12. We were
stunned by a mammoth
natural disaster,
saddened by grave human
loss and suffer, and
deeply moved by many
touching rescue
stories. Despite the
swift rescue efforts,
it is estimated
the earthquake has
killed at least 20,000
people and feared the
death toll will rise. In
the city of Mianyang
alone, near the
earthquake's epicenter,
over 18,600 people are
still buried under the
rubble of collapsed
buildings.
Three
days have passed since
the horrifying 7.9
magnitude tremor. As
the clock ticks, it
would require miracles
to find more survivors
from the rubbles despite
the round-clock frantic
efforts. However, the
impact of the earth is
huge and long lasting!
The Chinese government
estimates that as many
as 3.5 million homes
have been destroyed. The
urgent help needed from
numerous parentless-
children,
childless-parents,
home-less families, and
injured souls and bodies
is huge and beyond the
capacity of the Chinese
government.
Please
help the survivors and
people who lost their
loved ones in this
tragedy by making a
donation or by simply
spreading the words out.
